Modern astrobiology is the scientific study of the origin, evolution, distribution, and future of life in the universe. It seeks to synthesize concepts and methodologies from astronomy, biology, chemistry, geology, planetary science, and even the social sciences and philosophy. In this talk I will provide a broad introduction to astrobiology for scientists and students across disciplines. I will include my own experiences working within the framework of NASA’s Astrobiology Institute, giving examples of the types of efforts that are possible, with the overarching goal of catalyzing novel interdisciplinary collaborations for education, research, and public outreach within the new Astrobiology Institute of the University of Crete.
