Samuel Gullin obtained his Bachelor's degree in Astronomy from Stockholm University, Sweden, in 2019, and his Master's degree in Astronomy in 2021, from the same. During 2022 and 2023 he studied at a Ph.D. level in Università di Pisa, Italy.

Career

In A.A. 19/20, he was awarded an Erasmus+ scholarship for studies in Università di Padova, taking the opportunity to follow courses in e.g. Machine learning and Particle physics. His Master's thesis work relied on simulations on supercomputers at the Swedish National Infrastructure for Computing partly funded through the Swedish Research Council grant agreement No. 2016-07213, and regarded the effects of Fermi-like acceleration of neutrinos in the ejecta surrounding CCSNe. He joined IA as a software engineer in May 2024 and commenced his PhD in November 2024.

Interests

Multimessenger astrophysics, supernovae, extreme objects, cosmic rays, high-capacity computations.

Kalliopi Barla graduated from the Highschool of Kastelli Pediados, Heraklion, in 2018 with a grade of 18,3/20,0. In the same year she started her undergraduate studies in the Physics Department of the University of Ioannina. During the spring semester of academic year 2021-22, she was an Erasmus studies student in the Faculty of Sciences of Universidad de Girona, in Catalonia, Spain.

Career

In October 2023, she started working on her senior thesis under the supervision of Prof. Nikolaos Chatzianastasiou, exploring possible effects of solar activity (using sunspot number as index) on stratospheric temperatures during the last 80 years.

Career

2016, he and his school’s science team participated in the ESA “ASTRO PI” competition, advancing to the next phases with two projects. In the summer of 2022, he began his bachelor’s thesis titled “Diagnostics for Compact Object Types in Extragalactic X-ray Binaries” under the supervision of Professor A. Zezas, in which he studied X-ray binaries using machine learning techniques and algorithms. He presented it in July 2024. That same summer, he was accepted to and attended the 2022 Summer School of Astrostatistics in Crete. In the summer of 2023, he completed an internship at JADBio – Gnosis DA as a junior data scientist. In the summer of 2024, he undertook an Erasmus+ internship at the Max Planck Institute for Extraterrestrial Physics. Under the supervision of Dr. Johannes Buchner, he applied simulation-based inference on eROSITA surveys of quasars and their host galaxies. At the end of this internship, he presented a poster at the “First Results from the SRG/eROSITA All-Sky Survey: From Stars to Cosmology” conference.
