Charalambidis

Charalambidis

Dimitrios Charalambidis obtained his Doctoral Degree in Physics (Dokt. Rar. Nat. 1988) from the Albert Ludwigs Universitat Freiburg (Germany) in 1987. His academic genealogy tree is here.

Career

From 1988-1991 he was as a Research Associate at FORTH/IESL. He joined the Univ. of Crete as an Assistant Professor in 1992 and became an Associate Professor in 1996 and Full Professor in 2004. He retired and was elected Emeritus Professor in 2020. From 1992 till 2024 was affiliated faculty member of IESL-FORTH and since 2020 he is Chief Scientific Advisor of ELI-ALPS. He joined IA-FORTH in 2024 to assist with his extensive experience in laser physics to the endeavours of Skinakas Observatory in the area of secure laser telecommunications with satellites.

AMO-Physics, Atoms in strong electromagnetic fields, Intense attosecond science and technology, Laser - surface interactions, Coherent XUV and X-ray sources, Coherent phenomena, Multi-XUV-photon processes, XUV-pump-XUV-probe spectroscopy.

Tassis

Kostas Tassis obtained his BSc in Physics at the University of Thessaloniki in 1999 and his PhD in Theoretical Astrophysics at the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign (USA) in 2005. His academic geneaology tree is here.

Career

He was a Postdoctoral Fellow at The University of Chicago (2005 - 2008) and at Jet Propulsion Laboratory (a NASA lab run by Caltech) (2008-2011). He was elected as an Assistant Professor at the University of Crete in 2011, and he joined the Department of Physics in the fall of 2012. Between 2011 and 2012 he was a Visiting Scientist at the Max-Planck Institute for Radioastronomy in Bonn, Germany. He was promoted to an Associate Professor in 2018 and the same year he was awarded an ERC consolidator grant entitled "Polar-Areas Stellar-Imaging in Polarization High-Accuracy Experiment - PASIPHAE". In 2023 he was promoted to Professor.

Interests

Star formation in the Galaxy and the Universe, interstellar medium physics, MHD simulations of astrophysical systems, interstellar chemistry.

Zezas

Andreas Zezas
Education

Andreas Zezas received his BSc in Physics from the Univ. of Patras in 1996 and his PhD in 2002 from the University of Leicester (UK). His thesis work was on the X-ray emission from normal galaxies. His academic genealogy tree is here.

Career

From 2000 until 2008 he was a researcher at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics at Cambridge, MA (USA). There he worked on X-ray observations of nearby galaxies with the Chandra and XMM-Newton X-ray observatories. He joined the Department of Physics as an Assistant Professor in the fall of 2008, he was promoted to Associate Professor in 2015 and to a Professor in 2020. In 2014 he was awarded an ERC consolidator grant entitled Accreting binary populations in Nearby Galaxies: Observations and Simulations (A-BINGOS). He was promoted to Professor of Observational Astrophysics in 2020. He is serving as Chairperson of the Department since September 1st, 2023.

Interests

The nature of the discrete X-ray sources in other galaxies (neutron star and black-hole X-ray binaries, and supernova remnants), induced star-formation and nuclear activity in interacting galaxies, and the cosmological evolution of galaxies and their populations of compact objects.

Pavlidou

Vasiliki Pavidou obtained her BSc in Physics at the University of Thessaloniki in 1999 and her PhD in Theoretical Astrophysics at the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign (USA) in 2005. Her academic genealogy tree is here.

Career

She was a postdoctoral fellow at the Institute for Cosmological Physics of the University of Chicago (2005-2008) and an Einstein fellow at Caltech (2008-2011). During the 2011-2012 year she was a visiting scientist at the Max-Planck Institute for Radioastronomy. She was elected as an Assistant Professor at the Department of Physics in 2010 and she joined the Department in the fall of 2012. In 2014 she was the recipient of the “L’Oreal-UNESCO Award for women in science”. She was promoted to an Associate Professor in 2018 and to a Professor in 2023. Since June 2021 she is the Deputy Director of the Institute of Astrophysics, FORTH. In June 2023 she was also elected Associate Editor in the journal Astronomy & Astrophysics. In 2024 she was awarded an ERC Synergy grant entitled "MW-Atlas" to create the first three-dimensional, comprehensive atlas of our Milky Way galaxy. As of February 28, 2025 she is the acting Director of IA.

Interests

High-energy astrophysics, Cosmology, cosmic-ray and gamma-ray astrophysics, optopolarimetry of high-energy sources, magnetic fields in the Milky Way and extragalactic environments, radioastronomy, dark matter, dark energy, probing particle physics with astrophysics and cosmic rays.

Papamastorakis

papamastorakis
Education

Ioannis Papamastorakis obtained his PhD in Observational Astrophysics in 1975 from the Techniche Universitat Munchen (Germany). His academic genealogy tree is here.

Career

He joined to University of Crete in 1985 as an Assistant Professor. He was promoted to an Associate Professor in 1990 and to Professor in 2005. He retired and was elected Emeritus Professor in 2009. He served as the founding Director of Skinakas Observatory from 1985 until his retirement. In 2019, ten years after his retirement, the guest house at Skinakas Observatory was named in his honour. Since 2001 he is the Scientific Director of the Onassis Foundation Science Lecture Series, that take place every July at FORTH.

Papadakis

Iossif Papadakis received his BSc in Physics from the University of Athens in 1989 and his PhD in Astrophysics from the Queen Mary & Westfield College of the University of London (UK) in 1992. His academic genealogy tree is here.

Career

He was a research fellow at the Physics Department of the University of Southampton between 1993 - 1994 and 1997. He then moved to University of Crete, where he worked as a research associate until 2001, when he accepted a position of researcher at IESL FORTH. In 2003 he commenced his appointment as an Assistant Professor at the University of Crete, he was promoted to an Associate Professor in 2009 and to a Professor in 2014. He served as the Chairman of the Department of Physics from November 2015 until August 2019.

Interests

Extragalactic Astrophysics, with main emphasis on active galaxies related studies, in particular in the X-rays.

Kylafis

Kylafis Nikos photo

Nikos (Nick) Kylafis received his BSc in Physics from the Univ. of Patras and his PhD in Theoretical Astrophysics at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (USA) in 1978. His academic genealogy tree is here.

Career

He was a postdoctoral fellow at Caltech (1979 - 1981) and at the Institute for Advanced Study, Princeton (1981 - 1984). Then, he was an Assistant Professor at Columbia University (1984 - 1985) before accepting an Assistant Professor position at the University of Crete in 1985. He was promoted to Associate Professor in 1989 and Professor in 1997. He served as Chairman of the Department of Physics from 1999 to 2003, as well as Dean of the School of Sciences from September 2008 to May 2013. During the period 2012-2116 he was a member of the Council of the University of Crete. He retired and was elected Emeritus Professor in 2016. In 2018 he was elected as member of the Council of the European Astronomical Society. He was awarded the 2019 "S. Pichorides Award for  Excellence in Academic Teaching" of the Univ. of Crete. In 2019 the Institute of Astrophysics established the "Nick Kylafis Lectureship" in his honour.

Interests

Theoretical Astrophysics with special interests in Production and Transfer of Radiation, Compact X-ray Sources, Spiral Galaxies, and Astrophysical MASERs. He has contributed to the so-called Goldreich-Kylafis effect.
