I will give a broad introduction to what we have learned about galaxy evolution. Much of our knowledge of the structure, dynamics and stellar content of galaxies derives from measuring scaling laws that we use to deduce what physical processes are important in shaping galaxies as a function of mass and redshift. I will focus on the Fundamental Plane and stellar populations using data on local galaxies from the SAMI survey and to half the age of the Universe using other survey results.
