Charalambos Daoutis received his bachelor's degree in physics in 2021 and his Master's in Advanced Physics in the field of Astrophysics and Space Physics in 2022 from the University of Crete. In the fall of 2022 he was accepted as a PhD student at the Department of Physics.

Career

During his undergraduate and postgraduate studies he studied the various mechanisms of galaxy activity. He developed diagnostics for galactic activity in the optical and infrared part of the spectrum, utilizing machine learning methods. He collaborates with Professor Andreas Zezas in the study of the evolution of galaxies and the application of machine learning methods in Astrophysics. In May 2022 he commenced a studentship at the Center for Astrophysics at Harvard University (USA).

Álvarez-Ortega

Diego Álvarez Ortega obtained his BSc in Physics at the Universidad de Valladolid (Spain) in 2021. He obtained his MSc in Particle Physics and Physics of the Cosmos at Universidad de Cantabria (Spain) in 2022.

Career

In 2021 he was awarded with a JAE Intro SOMdM scholarship to complete his master thesis “On the inpainting of incomplete CMB sky maps” at the Instituto de Física de Cantabria (IFCA). Since December 2022 he is a PhD student at the University of Crete and IA-FORTH under the supervision of Dr. Carolina Casadio.

Cristina Maria Lofaro obtained her BSc in Astronomy at the “Università degli Studi di Padova” (Italy) in 2019. She obtained her MSc in Astrophysics and Cosmology at the same University in 2021.

Career

In 2019, she was an intern at the University of Cardiff and, in 2021, she won a scholarship “Scaling relations in nearby galaxies: the interplay of stars, dust and gas” at the Università degli Studi di Padova” (Italy). She joined the Department of Physics of the University of Crete and the Institute of Astrophysics (IA-FORTH) in November 2022 as a PhD student under the supervision of Dr. Tanio Diaz Santos.

Papadaki

katerina papadaki
Education

Katerina Papadaki completed her BSc in Physics and her MSc in Advanced Physics at the University of Crete in 2019 and 2021 respectively. In 2021 she commenced her PhD in the Department of Computer Science under the supervision of Dr. George Tzagkatakis and Prof. Kostas Tassis.

Career

The last year of her undergraduate studies she collaborated with the research group of Prof. George Tsironis, in the project of chaotic timeseries prediction using Recurrent Neural Networks. Her master’s thesis with title “Modeling of Speech Signals using Recurrent Neural Networks”, was completed under the supervision of Dr. Yannis Pantazis. During the same period she also collaborated with Prof. Vasiliki Pavlidou on the analysis of optopolarimetric observations with statistical and Machine Learning tools. The title of her PhD thesis is "Computational Intelligence for Multimodal Astrophysical Tomography" and it is part of the project "Polar", and it is part of the ongoing collaboration between FORTH and the Univ. of Cambridge under the auspices of GAPSTI.

Konstantinou

Anna Konstantinou
Education

Anna Konstantinou obtained her BSc in Physics with specialization in "Astrophysics, Astronomy and Mechanics" from the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens in 2018 and her MSc at the Dept. of Physics of the University of Crete.  She is currently a PhD student at the University of Crete and IA-FORTH.

Career

At the Univ. of Athens she completed her undergraduate thesis, entitled "Spectroscopic study of Solar System bodies in optical wavelengths" (in greek) in order to detect molecular compounds in their atmospheres. After completing her Master Thesis entitled "Study of the impact of interstellar cloud shapes on CMB polarization foregrounds", she commenced her PhD on realistic simulations of the magnetic fields in galaxies.

Chanlaridis

Chanlaridis Savvas
Education

Savvas Chanlaridis obtained his BSc in Physics in 2016 from the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (Greece) where he majored in Nuclear & Elementary Particle Physics. He then moved to the University of Bonn (Germany) from where he was awarded a MSc in Astrophysics in 2019. His master thesis was titled "Non-accreting Helium Stars as Progenitors of Thermonuclear Supernovae" and was performed under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Norbert Langer and Dr. John Antoniadis at the Argelander-Institute of Astronomy.

Career

Savvas Chanlaridis moved back to Aristotle University of Thessaloniki in 2020 as a guest researcher in the group of Prof. Dr. Nikolaos Stergioulas where he studied the effect of stellar wind on the evolution of low-mass helium stars. In 2021 he joined the Dept. of Physics of the University of Crete and the Institute of Astrophysics - FORTH as a PhD student in order to work on the understanding of the mass spectrum of neutron stars under the supervision of Dr. John Antoniadis.

Roman Fernandez

Román Fernández Aranda obtained his BSc in Physics at the Complutense University of Madrid (Spain) in 2019 and the MSc in Astrophysics at the same university in 2020. 

Career

In 2020 he was an intern at the European Space Astronomy Center (ESAC) of ESA in Spain. He joined the Dept. of Physics of the Univ. of Crete and the Institute of Astrophysics in January 2021 as a PhD student under the supervision of Dr. Tanio Diaz Santos. He was awarded a 1 year ESO studentship and in April 2022 he commenced his collaboration with Dr. Evanthia Hatziminaoglou and Dr. Paola Andreani at ESO,Garching (Germany).

Kyritsis

Elias

Elias Kyritsis obtained his BSc in Physics at the University of Crete in 2018 as well as his MSc in 2020 under the supervision of Prof. Zezas. He  commenced his PhD in astrophysics in October 2020.

Career

During the summer of 2019 he attended a research program at the European Space Research and Technology Centre (ESTEC) of ESA in the Netherlands. He is working with Prof. Andreas Zezas in topics related to observational astrophysics and machine learning.

Tsouros

Alexandros Tsouros
Education

Alexandros Tsouros completed his BSc in Physics from the Univ. of Crete in 2019 as a valedictorian in his class. His undergraduate thesis was entitled "de Sitter versus Anti de Sitter flows and the (super) gravity landscape" and was performed under the supervision of Prof. E. Kiritsis. He then moved to Oxford University from where he was awarded an MSc in Mathematical and Theoretical Physics in June 2020.

Career

Alexandros Tsouros joined the Institute of Astrophysics as a PhD student in August 2020 to work under the supervision of Prof. V. Pavlidou. In 2021 he was awarded a fellowship from the Hellenic Foundation for Research & Innovation towards the completion of his thesis entitled "Reconstructing the Magnetic Field of the Milky Way via Astrophysical Techniques and Numerical Simulations", being ranked 1st in Greece in the field of Natural Sciences In 2024 he received the "Eleftherios N. Economou Doctoral Student Research Award” from the Department of Physics.
