The Institute of Astrophysics is excited to announce that Mr. Elias Kyritsis was recently awarded his PhD from the Department of Physics, has received the Eleftherios N. Ekonomou Research Award for the year 2025.
The award is given to a doctoral student in recognition of the added value of the Department of Physics as a place where talented young people can conduct internationally renowned research in Greece. Mr. Kyritsis received it for his work "The first all-sky survey of star-forming galaxies with eROSITA: Scaling relations and a population of X-ray luminous starbursts," which was published in the journal Astronomy & Astrophysics in 2025. Mr. Kyritsis will continue his research as a postdoctoral fellow at the Max Planck Institute of Extraterrestrial Physics in Munich, Germany.
The awards were established in 2024 in honor of Lefteris Economou, the first chair of the Department and an internationally distinguished scientist, who played a decisive role in shaping the first critical steps of the University of Crete and the Department of Physics, and who contributed tirelessly to research and teaching for over 40 years in the Department of Physics.
The prize was awarded to Mr. Kyritsis by Prof. Economou, during a ceremony at the Department of Physics on Thursday 4 December 2025 at 5pm.
