Διάλεξη Ν. Κυλάφη 2023

Την 5η ετήσια Διακεκριμένη Διάλεξη «Νικόλαος Κυλάφης» θα δώσει για το 2023 o διακεκριμένος αστροφυσικός Steven Balbus, κάτοχος της έδρας Αστρονομίας Savilian στο Πανεπιστήμιο Οξφόρδης (ΗΒ).

Η διάλεξη του καθηγητή Balbus, η οποία θα ακολουθήσει τη δημόσια τελετή αναγόρευσης, θα είναι ανοιχτή για το κοινό στην αγγλική γλώσσα με τίτλο «Understanding black holes from stars destroyed by tidal forces» και θα πραγματοποιηθεί την Πέμπτη 19 Οκτωβρίου 2023 στις 14.00 στο Κεντρικό Αμφιθέατρο «Γ. Λιάνης» του Ιδρύματος Τεχνολογίας και Έρευνας (ΙΤΕ), με ταυτόχρονη διαδικτυακή μετάδοση. Ο τιμώμενος Καθηγητής Balbus είναι διεθνώς αναγνωρισμένος για καθοριστικής σημασίας ανακαλύψεις στο πεδίο της θεωρητικής αστροφυσικής, και ειδικότερα σε θέματα που σχετίζονται με βαρυτική αστάθεια στη μεσοαστρική ύλη καθώς και δίσκους προσαύξησης γύρω από μελανές οπές. Το φαινόμενο της «μαγνητοπεριστροφικής αστάθειας» είναι γνωστό ως «Balbus-Hawley» προς τιμήν του. Επιπλέον, έχει λάβει μια σειρά από ιδιαίτερα σημαντικά βραβεία μεταξύ των οποίων τα:

• Wolfson Research Merit Award of the Royal Society, 2013
• Shaw Prize (με τον J.F. Hawley), 2013 (γνωστό και ως «Νόμπελ της Ανατολής» που συνοδεύεται από χρηματικό βραβείο $1.2 εκατομμυρίων)
• Μέλος της US National Academy of Sciences, 2015
• Fellow της Royal Society, 2016
• Eddington Medal της Royal Astronomical Society, 2020
• Dirac Medal, 2021

Από το 2004 έως το 2012 ο καθηγητής Balbus ήταν κάτοχος της έδρας «Professeur des Universités» στο École Normale Supérieure στο Παρίσι (Γαλλία).

The “Nick Kylafis Lectureship” was established by the Foundation for Research and Technology - Hellas in 2019 in order to honor Nick Kylafis, Professor Emeritus at the Dept. of Physics of the Univ. of Crete, on the occasion of his 70th birthday, for his 35 years of scientific contributions and leadership towards the founding and continuous improvement of the astrophysics group at the University of Crete and FORTH. This lifelong commitment has been instrumental in the international recognition of the research activities of the Crete astrophysics group, which led to the creation of the Institute of Astrophysics at FORTH in 2018. Under the auspices of the Lectureship, a distinguished theoretical astrophysicist is invited annually at FORTH for a brief visit. The Institute of Astrophysics anticipates that establishing the "N. Kylafis Lecture" will attract distinguished Astrophysicists to Crete, who will inspire with their presence the younger generations of scientists trained at FORTH and the University of Crete, and communicate to the wider scientific community of Greece the latest achievements in the rapidly evolving field of Theoretical Astrophysics.
